Oxidative Stress in Genetic Mouse Models of Parkinson’s Disease

Gene-environment interactions involving oxidative stress in genetic mouse models of PD. Environmental factors and ageing converge to induce cellular oxidative stress, and this can either lead to cell death, or cell survival, based on genetic background. As shown in various gene-environment interaction studies in mouse models of PD (see Table 3), the PD genes can tilt the balance either to cell death, or to cell survival, thereby modulating the survival of the neurons following oxidative damage.
