This study analyzed occupational health hazards for Intensive Care Unit (ICU) nurses and nursing technicians, comparing differences in the number and types of hazards which occur at the beginning and end of their careers. A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out with 26 nurses and 96 nursing technicians from a public hospital in the Federal District, Brazil. A Likert-type work-related symptom scale (WRSS) was used to evaluate the presence of physical, psychological, and social risks. Data were analyzed with the use of the SPSS, version 12.0, and the Kruskal-Wallis test for statistical significance and differences in occupational health hazards at the beginning and at the end of the workers' careers. As a workplace, ICUs can cause work health hazards, mostly physical, to nurses and nursing technicians due to the frequent use of physical energy and strength to provide care, while psychological and social hazards occur to a lesser degree.

Occupational Health Hazards in ICU Nursing Staff

This paper examines the evidence supporting treatments within the renin-angiotensin aldosterone system (RAS), the role cardioprotection plays within the management of hypertension, considerations around medication adherence, and the role of the nurse or nurse practitioner in guiding patients to achieve higher hypertension control rates. A large body of data now exists to support the use of angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) and angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs) which act on RAS, in the management of hypertension and their effect on cardiovascular risk reduction. Current evidence suggests that inhibition of the RAS is an important target for cardioprotection. RAS inhibition controls blood pressure and also reduces target-organ damage. This is especially important in populations at high-risk for damage including patients with diabetes and those with chronic kidney disease. Both ARBs and ACEIs target the RAS offering important reductions in both BP and target organ damage.

Time in Care for Older People Living in Nursing Homes

Depression is common among older persons. An experimental study was undertaken to test the impact of a four-week hope program on depressed nursing home residents. Residents aged 65 or older, who met the criteria for this pilot study and agreed to participate, were randomly assigned to (a) an intervention group, and provided with weekday hope interventions mainly involving positive messages and pictures or (b) a modified control group, and provided with a friendly weekday greeting. The structured hope intervention was not proven effective for reducing depression or raising hope. Instead, a significant reduction in depression among the control subjects was found, as well as a nonsignificant increase in their level of hope. Although these findings suggest friendly visitors may be a more efficacious nonpharmacological approach for reducing depression, further investigations are needed to confirm this and to explore the impact of other hope interventions.

A Hope Intervention Compared to Friendly Visitors as a Technique to Reduce Depression  among Older Nursing Home Residents

This study investigated the ICD-9 diagnostic rates of depressive and anxiety disorders, including major depression, neurotic depression, adjustment disorder with depressed mood, depressive disorder NOS (not elsewhere classified), and anxiety states, among elderly Medicare beneficiaries (age &#x2265; 65) who received a colorectal cancer diagnosis between 1998 and 2002 in U.S. The Seer-Medicare data, representing 14&#x2013;25&#x00025; of the U.S. population, was used to examine ICD-9 diagnostic rates of depressive and anxiety disorders among 56,182 colorectal cancer outpatients and 265,382 noncancer outpatients, respectively. The findings show that the ICD-9 diagnoses ranged from 1.5&#x00025; to 1.8&#x00025; for depressive disorders and 0.8&#x00025; to 1.2&#x00025; for anxiety states in the colorectal cancer outpatients, and from 2&#x00025; to 2.5&#x00025; for depressive disorders and 1.1&#x00025; to 1.5&#x00025; for anxiety states in the noncancer outpatients over five years. More than 70&#x00025; of colorectal cancer outpatients with a depressive diagnosis were diagnosed for depressive disorder NOS. The findings suggest that the difficulty in recognizing depressive symptoms in colorectal cancer patients may contribute in part to the low ICD-9 diagnostic rates of depressive disorders. They call for research attention to the investigation of depressive symptoms for improving the recognition and treatment in this patient population.
