aIntracellular water was determined from total tissue water, measured gravimetrically, and the volume of distribution of inulin [9]. Values are the mean ± standard error of the mean. bSlices were incubated in a medium containing 146 mM Na+, 5 mM K+, 1 mM Mg2+, 1.3 mM Ca2+, 161 mM Cl−, 2 mM phosphate, 1 mM S, and Tris (10 mM pH 7.4). It was gassed with O2. Cl-free medium contained N instead of Cl−. Ouabain was at 2 mM.
