Noncontact Measurements for Vibration-Based SHM and NDE

Description

In the last decades, unprecedented growth in structural health monitoring (SHM) and nondestructive evaluation (NDE) of engineering systems under vibration using instrumentation such as strain gauges and accelerometers have been observed. These sensors produce results at only a discrete number of points, are time consuming and difficult to deploy on large-sized structures, and require additional instrumentations. To address all the limitations of current technology, the research community has been actively exploring new noncontact measurement techniques for SHM and NDE. Achievements made in new technologies such as vision and thermal imaging, ground-penetrating radar, and air-coupled ultrasonic allowed the development of a new generation of noncontact measuring methods for vibration applications. These technologies enable straightforward assessment of the physical and dynamics condition of structural components.

This special issue aims to explore the recent work on advances and developments in the field of noncontact measurement technologies and methods in SHM and NDE of engineering structures. The manuscript will cover both recent theoretical and experimental efforts in noncontact sensing technologies, their modalities, fusion, signal processing, and interdisciplinary investigation in the theories, algorithms, and methods with emphasis on vibration analysis applications. We invite researchers to contribute original research and review articles.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

  • Vision-based SHM systems for vibration monitoring of engineering structures
  • Image processing methods in damage and crack detection under vibration excitation
  • Vision-based displacement, shock, and vibration measurements
  • Digital image correlation and photogrammetry in NDE and SHM
  • Image-based vibration measurement and data integration in modal analysis
  • Noncontact techniques in NDE,SHM, and modal testing applications
  • Laser-based, radar, and microwave interferometry vibration measurement techniques
  • Nondestructive testing and damage detection
  • Inspection using autonomous and unmanned vehicles and robots
  • Soft computing methods in vibration-based SHM and NDE
