Energy-Efficient Reconfigurable Mobile Information Systems: Emerging Trends and Challenges
Description
The future of mobile information systems is transcending towards systems where the radio environment becomes controllable, programmable, and intelligent by leveraging emerging technologies such as intelligent reflecting surfaces and cognitive radios. These technologies possess perception, learning, reasoning, and decision-making capabilities where different parts of the system might be configured and controlled via intelligent and software-defined system paradigms. Energy efficiency is an important aspect in reconfigurable mobile information systems, not only due to the technological limitations on energy supplies but also due to the environmental impact caused by the information and communication technologies. Besides the environmental concerns about energy consumption in mobile information systems, and the possible reduction in operational expenditures, the need to improve energy efficiency becomes apparent, as the number of power-consuming functionalities required from these devices increases.
However, there still exist several critical challenges in the energy-efficient reconfigurable mobile information systems. A huge challenge is that the inherent mechanism of the integration of energy efficiency and reconfigurable mobile information system is not clear, which requires an intelligent approach to reveal the complicated mechanism. Another challenge is that the system design becomes much more complicated, where we should jointly take into account the energy consumption, the system reconfiguration, as well as the conventional performance metrics. Another challenge is the complicated system resource allocation, as the system resource dimension has increased significantly due to the reconfiguration, and some intelligent algorithms should be developed to fully utilize the system resource, in an intelligent and efficient approach.
