Cytokines and Disease
Description
A myriad of cytokines encompass the phylogenetically oldest system of signaling molecules produced throughout the body that regulate cellular communication. Recent evidence in biology and medicine has expanded the knowledge of cytokines function in many disease states and conditions as well as the severe adverse effects implicated in the escalated production associated with specific disease conditions. This special issue is intended to provide an updated view on the role of cytokines in degenerative and neoplastic diseases pathogenesis. Special emphasis will be dedicated to the contribution of cytokines to systemic conditions including neurodegeneration, cancer, and graft/prosthesis rejection. We invite articles that explore all aspects of cytokine contribution to degenerative and neoplastic diseases in humans as well as in animal models. Original and review papers should focus on the action of cytokines in a particular disease at the molecular level with particular emphasis on cytokine storm, cytokine imbalance, and cytokine avoidance. If more than one cytokine is involved, the manuscripts should address the interrelationship between the different cytokines and their respective signaling pathways as well as their contribution to the etiology of the pertinent diseases. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:
- Overview of how cytokines add to degenerative and neoplastic diseases
- Identifying mechanisms employed by tumor cells to subvert the host cytokine response
- New cellular and animal models to test and understand activity of cytokines in degenerative and neoplastic diseases
- Cytokines involved in neurodegeneration
- Cytokines in graft and prosthesis rejection
Before submission authors should carefully read over the journal’s Author Guidelines, which are located at http://www.hindawi.com/journals/mi/guidelines/. Prospective authors should submit an electronic copy of their complete manuscript through the journal Manuscript Tracking System at http://mts.hindawi.com/submit/journals/mi/cd/ according to the following timetable:
