Thyroid carcinoma originating from follicular cells generally has an indolent character compared to most other human malignancies, but cases having certain characteristics are progressive and dire prognosis. To perform appropriate surgical treatment and postoperative followup, evaluation of biological characteristics of each case is essential. There are three types of evaluations predicting prognosis of patients with thyroid carcinoma. Firstly, preoperative evaluation on imaging studies is important to decide the extent of surgery (thyroidectomy and lymph node dissection). For this purpose, ultrasonography is the most useful tool. Secondly, some clinical features are most suitable to evaluate based on intraoperative findings. Thirdly, it is well known that certain pathological and molecular features significantly affect patients' prognoses.

We invite investigators to contribute original research articles and review articles to shed light on clinical, molecular, and pathological characteristics that are related to prognosis of patients with thyroid carcinoma in order to accurately discriminate high-risk patients from others. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

• Recent development in ultrasonographic evaluation for thyroid carcinoma patients
  • Comparison between ultrasound imaging and cytology or histopathology
  • Role of ultrasound in postoperative long-term followup for patients with differentiated thyroid carcinoma
  • Ultrasound findings predicting malignancy of thyroid nodules and high-grade malignancy such as wide extension of tumor and lymph node metastasis
• Development in evaluation on PET-CT scan for thyroid carcinoma
  • Prognostic impact of PET positivity of thyroid carcinoma
  • How PET-CT scan is useful for diagnosis of thyroid carcinoma
  • Indication of postoperative followup on PET-CT scan for thyroid carcinoma
• Prognostic factors of thyroid carcinoma based on various classification systems and guidelines
• Advances in molecular evaluation for prognosis of thyroid carcinoma
• Advances in pathological and morphological evaluations for biological behavior of thyroid carcinoma
• Prognosis of occult thyroid carcinoma and optimal surgical intervention for this disease
• Indication of ablation and/or adjuvant therapy using radioactive iodine (RAI)
  • Prognosis of RAI refractory patients
• How to follow patients with differentiated thyroid carcinoma positive for antithyroglobulin antibody after total thyroidectomy
