Metals and Disease
Description
Metals have played a major role in human history as well as in medicine. Usage of metals and metal compounds in industry, agriculture, and medicine results in higher exposure of humans to those chemicals. However, while some metals are essential for functionality of physiological processes, others are solely toxic. We like to highlight the beneficial effects of metals as they are used in modern medicine (e.g., cancer treatment) and contrast them with the multiple effects, which might occur as side effects of treatment or just by exposure to the (contaminated) environment.
For this special issue we particularly take an interest in review manuscripts, but we are open for original research articles on the topic, that report relevance of metals and metals compounds in human nutrition, diagnosis, therapy, environmental exposure, and toxicity. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:
- Impairment of the nervous system and cognitive function(s)
- Interaction with immune system
- Kidney and Nephrotoxicity
- Hearing and Ototoxicity
- Cardiovascular (including blood pressure regulation) treatment and impairment
- Cancer treatment and side effects
- Malnutrition (e.g., missing of essential metals)
Before submission authors should carefully read over the journal's Author Guidelines, which are located at http://www.hindawi.com/journals/jt/guidelines/. Prospective authors should submit an electronic copy of their complete manuscript through the journal Manuscript Tracking System at http://mts.hindawi.com/ according to the following timetable:
