Matrix Metalloproteinases and Tissue Inhibitor of Metalloproteinases Are Essential for the Inflammatory Response in Cancer Cells

TIMPs and MMPs in inflammation and tumor progression. TIMPs functions in inhibition of MMP activity, activation of the proinflammatory NF-κB pathway, and regulation of inflammation. MMPs play a critical role in tumor progression. Inflammatory cytokines enhance the dysfunction of MMPs, whereas MMPs increase inflammation in the tissue. TIMPs may modulate critical signaling pathways for inflammation and cancer independent of metalloproteinase inhibition.
