In the present society, more than one million annual limb amputations are carried out globally due to accidents, war casualties, cardiovascular disease, tumors, or congenital anomalies. Robotic prosthetic limb is a well-established research field that integrates advanced mechatronics and intelligent sensing in order to reinstate the lost sensorimotor functions and the physical appearance of the amputated limb.

In the last few decades many significant contributions have been made in this field. However, robotic prostheses are still to be perfected in order to enable a symbiotic interaction with the user and to generate human-like motions. This special issue aims at creating a multidisciplinary forum of discussion on the recent advances in robotic prosthetic limb and showing the diversity of the current approaches. We invite the submission of high quality articles containing original research findings, as well as topical reviews presenting relevant analysis and discussion on the current state of the art.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

• Developments of upper limb/lower limb robotic prosthetic limb
• Biomechanical investigations of robotic prostheses
• Novel sensors for prostheses
• Novel actuators for bionic prostheses to generate human-like motions
• Electromyography and/or Electroencephalogram signals based prostheses control
• Assessment and benchmarking of prostheses functionality
