Macular Surgery: Classification, Management and Surgical Techniques

Description

In recent years, there have been various advances in the management of vitreoretinal interface disorders, based on the International Vitreomacular Traction Study Group classification of vitreomacular adhesion, traction, and macular hole.

Advances in the tomographic analysis of vitreous traction allow to differentiate the pathophysiological mechanisms and to choose the best therapeutic strategy for all cases. The outer layer of the posterior vitreous cortex leads to tangential traction responsible for the formation of a macular pucker or macular hole (full thickness macular hole, lamellar macular hole, pseudohole). Vitrectomy and peeling of epiretinal traction and internal limiting membrane still play a major role in the treatment of the vitreomacular interface. Recently, many new surgical techniques have been proposed to achieve better results and better surgical outcomes (for example, some new surgical techniques for the management of refractory macular hole, such as amniotic membrane patch technique, free ILM flap technique, retina graft technique, etc.).

The aim of this Special Issue is to collate original research articles, clinical studies, experimental studies, as well as case series and review articles on vitreoretinal interface disorders and macular surgery, illustrating and discussing functional and/or anatomical evidences. We are particularly interested in articles about newly developed techniques of imaging, diagnosis, and treatment of macular disorders. Both original research and review articles are welcome.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

  • Advances in the diagnostic techniques of imaging (Angio-OCT, enhanced depth imaging OCT, swept source OCT) of the vitreoretinal interface disorders and macular disorders
  • The ILM peeling technique and other new techniques for Epiretinal Membrane (ERM) treatment
  • The Inverted Flap technique and other new techniques for macular hole treatment
  • Different strategies to manage refractory macular hole (free ILM flap, retina graft, amniotic membrane patch, etc..)
  • Different techniques to manage macular hole in challenging scenarios (macular hole, retinal detachment in high myopia, traumatic macular hole, large chronic macular hole, etc…)
  • Assessment of lamellar macular hole and macular pseudohole (current classification in new different clinical entities, with different surgical indications and prognosis)
  • How to manage myopic foveoschisis/myopic traction maculopathy (macular buckling versus ab-interno techniques)
  • How to manage optic disk pit maculopathy
  • How to manage tractional Diabetic Macular Edema (DME)
  • How to manage vitreomacular traction syndrome (role of enzymatic vitreolysis with ocriplasmin, limited vitrectomy techniques, etc…)
  • Role of different vital dyes for vitreoretinal interface disorders treatment (chromovitrectomy)
  • Anatomical and functional results after macular surgery
  • Retinal damage induced by internal limiting membrane and macular peeling
  • Other surgical complications
