Nanotechnology for Tissue Engineering Applications

Description

As all the living systems are governed by molecular behavior at nanometer scales, nanotechnology has led to a better understanding of biological systems. Nanobiomaterials such as nanofibers, nanotubes, nanoparticles, and other nanofabricated devices with unique surface topography provide advantageous interaction with the proteins that control cellular function. Tissue engineering strategies combining engineering principles and methods and biological sciences in creating implantable tissues have been viewed as the most promising technologies for tissue regeneration. Nanobiomaterials with advantages in cell-biomaterial interactions have been intensively applied as scaffolding materials for tissue repair. And nanofabrication technologies have been emerging as a great tool to create high-throughput platforms for investigating cell-microenvironment interactions.

The aim of this special issue of Journal of Nanomaterials is to provide the latest achievement of nanotechnology-based tissue engineering applications. This issue focused on the biomimetic design of tissue-engineered scaffolds with various nanobiomaterials. Research articles related to the fabrication, characterization, and the application of nanobiomaterials are anticipated. A fundamental study of cell-biomaterials interaction and nanobiomaterials properties are also welcome. An emerging field of engineering biomaterial surfaces with nanotechnology to prevent biofilm formation was also included in this issue. Topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Nanobiomaterials (nanofibers, nanotubes, and nanoparticles) used for tissue engineering application
  • Cell biomaterial interaction and cell response to nanotopography
  • Nanofabrication technology for microfluidic device
  • Biomimetic design of tissue-engineered scaffolds
  • Hydrogel nanocomposites/injectable scaffolds for tissue engineering
  • Computational scaffolds design
  • Biocompatibility and biodegradation of nanobiomaterials
  • Nanomaterial based growth factor/antibiotics release system for tissue engineering
  • Nanotechnology for biofilm prevention and control
