Agricultural Waste Biomass Valorization for Environmental Management
Description
The agricultural industry creates huge amounts of difficult-to-handle waste and by-products. The predominant waste materials can be utilized by converting them into useful products, for example, through biomass valorization. The need to avoid contamination and to utilize the limited number of resources available has significantly increased the demand for developments in the field of retention and recycling of agricultural wastes.
These wastes, if not treated properly, may harm human health and the environment. The main reason for such harmful properties of these wastes is the presence of high quantities of heavy metals, such as lead or cadmium. Therefore, these wastes need to be treated or utilized in various applications. Agricultural biomass is a relatively broad category of biomass that includes the food-based portion of crops, the non-food-based portion of crops, perennial grasses, and animal waste. Traditionally, there have been high costs associated with recovering most agricultural residues, and therefore, they have not yet been widely used for energy purposes. However, they can offer a sizeable biomass resource if the right technology and infrastructure are developed to economically recover and deliver this type of biomass to processing facilities.
The aim of this Special Issue is to explore different methods and technologies for the valorization of agricultural waste biomass. We welcome both original research and review articles.
