Genomics and Metabolomics in Obesity and Type 2 Diabetes

Description

Problem of obesity concerns all people independently on age, sex, and race and is becoming a burden in modern health care. The most serious clinical problem related to obesity is type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Although genetic background is important in pathophysiology of obesity and T2DM, less than 10% of the heritability of obesity and/or T2DM can be explained by genetic variants. Consequently, additional information is necessary to study predisposition, evolution, and potential treatment of T2DM and obesity. Metabolomics is another holistic approach which can be used to understand and control biological complexity. Correlational analyses of genetic data with global metabolite measurements (e.g., metabolomics or lipidomics) could further increase our knowledge about relationship between obesity and T2DM. There are also preliminary studies suggesting interactions between obesity genotypes and different response to lifestyle changes, including diet composition and physical activity. Knowledge about these interactions could be extended by addition of metabolomics origin information.

Consequently, the idea of this special issue is to use genomics or genetic variant analysis and metabolomics to study mechanisms of evolution of T2DM or obesity. Also studies on treatment effects and prediction of treatment efficacy are desired. Currently, in case of T2DM and obesity, the effects of treatment strategies which do not use medications (physical activity, diet changes, and weight loss surgeries) on regulation of biological pathways are sought.

Therefore, this special issue will welcome research and review papers devoted to studying type 2 diabetes and obesity by use of genomics, metabolomics, or combination of different OMICS approaches. Research studies can be performed on humans and also on animal models.

Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Searching for novel biomarkers and alteration of biochemical pathways in T2DM and/or obesity
  • Following diabetes and obesity development by use of holistic approaches
  • Evaluation of physical activity as a key component in the prevention of type 2 diabetes by use of OMICS approaches
  • Nutrigenomics in diabetes research
  • Nutrimetabolomics in diabetes research
  • Use of OMICS approaches to study the effects of bariatric surgery in the treatment of type 2 diabetes
