The Future of Wireless Communications Systems: 5G and Beyond

Description

When exploring the evolution of traditional wireless communication models towards the new requirements of the future generation technologies, it is important to look at how communication engineers should face the resulting competitive challenges, in the context of the ever-increasing use of digital information systems, IoT-enabled devices, and communication machinery.

Wireless communication systems have experienced substantial revolutionary progress over the past few years. Various stakeholders, including commercial solutions providers, academic research groups, standards bodies, and end-users, have all greatly benefited from the radical changes led by the most recent 5G and beyond developments, which include paradigm-defining techniques such as network softwarization and virtualization, massive MIMO, ultra-densification, and the introduction of new frequency bands. Abundant mushrooming applications and verticals, including virtual and augmented reality (VAR), e-commerce, contactless payment, machine-to-machine communications, and enhanced mobile broadband, among others, have demonstrated the vast potential of 5G and beyond. These will fulfill the requirements of a fully connected world and provide ubiquitous wireless connectivity for all. However, maintaining high-speed connectivity, range, product design, efficiency, and reliability from mobile phones to Wi-Fi and the Internet of Things are key challenges designers face for wireless applications and devices.

This Special Issue aims to publish research presenting cutting-edge advances in the field of wireless communications, focusing on novel and advanced technologies, as well as on experimental and theoretical results within applied sciences. Contributions to emerging methods and technologies such as those related to wireless communication systems are especially encouraged. This Special Issue focuses on recent technological advancements in wireless communication systems. We welcome both original research and review articles.
