Advanced Engine Flows and Combustion

Description

Necessities for continuous reduction of carbon emissions and for compliance with future emission legislations have renewed the interest for developing advanced engine combustion. Whilst various low temperature combustion technologies and other relevant combustion technologies have been proposed and are being studied for internal combustion engines and aeroengines to achieve high engine efficiency, low fuel consumption and reductions of other harmful emissions and flow performances including air flows, fuel flows, mixture flows, and exhaust flows play very important roles. Those flow conditions could be optimised to benefit required mixing between fuel, air, and diluent gas and to provide appropriate velocity, pressure, and temperature environments in reaction area.

The present special issue is aiming at publishing high-quality research articles as well as reviews that seek to address recent development on flow characteristics, air-fuel mixing, ignition and combustion processes, and emission reduction. Relevant prospect on opportunities and challenges for alternative fuels and novel combustion will be also included. Both experimental works and numerical simulation will be considered.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

  • Main flow, cooling, and sealing flows
  • Compressible flow and shock wave
  • Exhaust systems and filters
  • Intake flow and in-cylinder air motion
  • Fuel injection and spray
  • Low temperature combustion
  • Ignition and combustion processes
  • Novel combustion technology
  • Soot formation
  • Alternative fuels
  • Chemical kinetics and models reduction
  • CFD simulation of flow and combustion
  • Laser diagnostics of flow characteristics and combustion process
