Travel Behavior and Transportation Systems Analysis of Electric Vehicles

Description

Electrification of transportation is widely regarded as an effective solution to energy security, climate change, and air quality. Electric vehicles (EVs) include hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), battery electric vehicles (BEVs), and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). Recently, the impacts of increasing market share of electric cars and trucks on transportation systems as well as their resulting travel behavior and transportation systems analysis problems, such as electricity-charging infrastructure planning, EV-based travel demand analysis, EVs’ energy cost analysis, and EVs’ market penetration analysis, intrigue a lot of attention from the research community and general public. However, with the continuous advances in EV technologies, the mechanism, means, and magnitude of these impacts and their changes and transitions are not fully understood yet. On the other hand, electrification of transportation is also reflected by the increasing penetration of electric bicycles, which now are widely adopted in many large cities with high population density, especially in some Asian and European countries. Their influences on transportation planning and travel behaviors are not fully investigated yet.

This special issue is focused on recent advances in the analysis of electric vehicles and bicycles’ impacts on motorists’ and cyclists’ travel behaviors and transportation systems operations and planning.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

  • Impacts of wired and wireless charging on traffic network flows
  • EV users’ travel behavior analysis based on real-world travel data
  • Impacts of stochastic charging demands on traffic flows and travel demands
  • Impact of EV users’ charging behavior on power grids
  • Stochastic transportation network analysis with EV flows
  • EV market penetration analysis and forecasting
  • Energy use and economic analysis of EVs with advances in charging and battery technologies
  • Transportation systems planning considering the use of electric bicycles
  • Electric connected and autonomous vehicles
  • Electric car and bicycle sharing systems
