Description
Water is an essential part of life and many aspects of the global economy depend and rely heavily on this important resource. The pollution of aquatic bodies by organic and inorganic contaminants is a major concern that has led to the development of many different analytical methods and techniques for determining the water quality and composition. Chemical sensors and sensing devices that employ polymers have been developed for the detection and quantification of a range of elemental species, ions, and molecules in water. Polymer membranes are designed to selectively interact with a particular analyte; however, very few sensors have been routinely deployed for long-term and continuous monitoring of organic and inorganic pollutants in water. There is a need for polymers and polymercomposite materials that are more robust and provide better selectivity, higher sensitivity, and superior chemical stability.
The aim of this special issue is to include papers related to the use of polymer-based materials in chemical sensors and sensing technologies for the determination of organic and inorganic contaminants in water. The special issue will cover the broad area of chemical sensor measurement and analysis of aquatic environments. This issue invites researchers to contribute original research as well as review articles, which deal with the use of polymer membranes for chemical sensing and monitoring of water pollutants.

- Polymer materials and films that are used in chemical sensor devices
- Polymer-based thin film (micro)extraction for the detection of pollutants in water
- Development of polymers and polymer composites for the separation and identification of environmental impurities

- Polymer-based sensors used for water quality monitoring
- Understanding the response mechanism of polymer-based sensors that employ optical, electrochemical, or piezoelectric transduction
