Recent Trends in Biosensing and its Clinical Applications

This issue is now closed for submissions.

Description

The last few years have seen breakthroughs that have largely improved our ability to detect biologically relevant molecules that can advance the development in the field of healthcare. These breakthroughs include improvement in detection sensitivity and specificity, miniaturization of the sensing platform, and the achievement of high multiplexibility. For example, the development of point-of-care biosensors has largely enabled home-based diagnostics and disease screening. Despite the fact that a high number of papers are published on the topic of biosensors every year, very few examples have successfully led to applications in real clinical settings. The main challenge is to demonstrate the robustness and flexibility of the developed biosensors and how they could improve the quality of healthcare.

The aim of this special issue is to receive original research and review articles that highlight the importance of biosensing for clinical applications, as well as provide a broad view of potential analytical methods and platforms that could have greater impact in clinics. In addition, it will focus on the remaining challenges and aim to understand the needs from clinicians’ perspective. Reviews describing the state-of-the-art for biosensor-based medical devices and sensing strategies are especially welcome.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

  • Innovative biosensor methods for analyte detection in clinical settings
  • Device or biosensor validations for clinical applications
  • Reviews of current biosensor methods that are widely applied in the field of precision medicine
  • Novel biosensor platforms for point-of-care diagnostics
  • New strategies that bridge biosensor research and clinical applications
  • New approaches of biosensor data analysis for clinical applications
