Surgical Aspect of Facial Nerve Disorders

Description

Acute facial nerve dysfunction, chronic facial nerve problems, and its several presentations can be managed by medical and surgical ways. Prognosis of facial nerve injury, selection of good candidates for surgery, decision making, and timing, as well as the type of approach that has several conflicting points and at least is subject to new updates and removals. This special issue will emphasize an awareness of this problem and promote discussion of different aspects of the management. The potential topics to be covered include, but are not limited to:

  • Electrophysiological aspect of decision making for surgical treatment of facial paralysis
  • Timing and the extent of the decompression for idiopathic, viral, and traumatic facial paralysis
  • Type of repair for facial nerve injury; suturing versus gluing
  • Type of repair for facial nerve injury; end-to-end anastomosis, interneural cable grafting, and 7-12 anastomosis
  • Surgery for facial neuroma
  • Functional aspect of facial nerve monitorisation during surgery
  • Acoustic neuroma and facial nerve
  • Treatment of altered function of the facial nerve following injury; synkinesis, crocodile tears, hemifacial spasm, and so forth
  • Facial nerve disorders in the newborn
  • Classification of injury and recovery
  • Trauma to the facial nerve; fracture of the temporal bone, thermal injury, anesthesia, nerve crush, avulsion/laceration, traction, and so forth
  • Infective, toxic, metabolic, and neoplastic aspects of facial paralysis
  • Recurrent and alternating facial palsy
