Peritoneal Dialysis

Description

Peritoneal dialysis (PD) has grown worldwide to become the third most common treatment modality for patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD), over the last decades. PD has remarkably extended the lives of patients with ESRD, some for decades. It has comparable risks and expenses, with the primary advantage being the ability to undertake treatment without visiting a medical facility. However, certain complications are more frequent with PD than with hemodialysis and sometimes force cessation of the PD. Infections at the tunnel, exit sites, and peritonitis followed by localized fluid collections, peritoneal adhesions, hernias, and leaks are the most common complications. The main focus of this special issue will be advantages, risks, and management of complications of PD. We welcome authors to submit original research articles, review articles, case reports, and clinical studies that address these issues. The topics to be covered include, but are not limited to:

  • Peritoneal dialysis and preservation of residual renal function
  • Methodology of assessment of fluid status and ultrafiltration problems
  • Management of ultrafiltration failure
  • Patient selection for automated peritoneal dialysis: for whom and when?
  • Long-term outcomes in automated peritoneal dialysis and in continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis
  • Infectious complications
  • In peritoneal dialysis is there sufficient evidence to make “PD first” therapy?
  • Survival comparison between hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis
  • Specific problems of long-term peritoneal dialysis patients
  • Peritoneal dialysis for elderly patients
  • Peritoneal dialysis in acute renal failure
  • Peritoneal dialysis in patients with severe congestive heart failure

Before submission authors should carefully read over the journal's Author Guidelines, which are located at http://www.hindawi.com/journals/ijn/guidelines/. Prospective authors should submit an electronic copy of their complete manuscript through the journal Manuscript Tracking System at http://mts.hindawi.com/ according to the following timetable:
