Current Controversies in Classification, Management, and Prevention of Bisphosphonate-Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaws

Description

Bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaws (BRONJ) is an adverse effect of bisphosphonate therapy and is most often seen in patients who have received bisphosphonates through IV therapy, but cases have been reported in patients who are taking oral bisphosphonates.

BRONJ adversely affects quality of life and produces significant morbidity in afflicted patients. Clinical guidance and staging are essential for a correct differential diagnosis of this pathology, and treatment strategies vary depending on stage of BRONJ, although the literature regarding the treatment of an established disease is not conclusive.

On the other hand, it is understood that clinical and treatment algorithms outlined are starting points, and modifications and refinements are necessary as the knowledge of BRONJ improves.

It is very important for oral surgeons and dentists to recognize this important pathology and even more to know how to prevent its occurrence.

We invite investigators to contribute with original research articles as well as review articles that will spread more light on this pathology. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Basic clinicopathologic features of BRONJ
  • Current criteria for classification
  • Diagnosis and management of BRONJ
  • Review of treatment strategies
  • Review of the risk factors for the disease
  • Protocols and guidelines for prevention of BRONJ

Before submission we encourage the authors to carefully read over the journal´s Author Guidelines, which are located at http://www.hindawi.com/journals/ijd/guidelines/. Prospective authors should submit an electronic copy of their complete manuscript through the journal Manuscript Tracking System at http://mts.hindawi.com/submit/journals/ijd/bronjs/ according the following timetable:
