Current Status and Future Directions of Capsule Endoscopy
Description
Since the introduction of small bowel capsule endoscopy (CE) thirteen years ago a high volume of literature on indications, diagnostic yields, and safety profiles has been presented. Numerous national and international guidelines have placed small bowel CE at the forefront of investigation into suspected diseases of the small bowel.
Since the advent of small bowel CE, CE has been applied to other organs including esophagus, stomach, and colon. The main indications for esophageal CE are screening for gastroesophageal reflux disease, Barrett’s esophagus, and varices; however, the clinical benefit is unconfirmed. Colon CE provides an alternative to conventional colonoscopy for symptomatic patients, while a possible role in colorectal cancer screening shows a promising result.
The main challenges in the development of CE are new devices with the ability to provide therapy, air inflation for a better vision of the small bowel, biopsy sampling systems attached to the capsule, and the possibility to guide and move the capsule with an external motion control.
We invite investigators to contribute original research articles as well as review articles addressing all aspects of clinical practice including the role of CE, the long-term clinical outcomes, the future directions in software, hardware development and their clinical applications, and particular situations in practice.
Potential topics include, but are not limited to:
- Capsule endoscopy for obscure gastrointestinal bleeding including long-term outcome
- Capsule endoscopy for Crohn’s disease
- Capsule endoscopy for small bowel tumors
- Capsule endoscopy for NSAID-enteropathy
- Capsule endoscopy for portal hypertensive enteropathy
- Capsule endoscopy for unexplained IDA
- Optimal bowel preparation for capsule endoscopy
- Progress and technical challenges in capsule endoscopy including gastric capsule endoscopy
- Future directions of capsule endoscopy, what tools we need in clinical practice
