Integrative Medicine in Respiratory Disorders

Description

The prevalence of respiratory disorders, such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), bronchitis, interstitial lung disease (ILD), and lung cancer is increasing worldwide. Although in recent years modern medicine has developed significantly for the treatment of respiratory disorders, the usage of integrative medicine is increasing.

However, our knowledge of the impact of the usage of integrative medicine for respiratory disorders is still limited in terms of pharmaceutical research and study approaches. There is a current crisis in the treatment of people with chronic respiratory disorders, due to high levels of economic cost and burden, and this has driven interest in non-pharmacologic approaches to care and management. Integrative medicine with complementary and alternative therapies (CAMs) is often viewed favorably by patients due to their low cost and rare adverse effects. The use of certain natural products and herbal extracts for the management of respiratory disorders is being widely studied to reveal biological mechanisms of action which could translate into clinical practice. Meanwhile, using evidence-based medicine and bioinformatics approaches may accelerate the translation of scientific discovery into new or improved standards of clinical practice and promotes a wide-ranging exchange between basic and clinical research.

The aim of this Special Issue is to present the impact of integrative medicine on the care and management of respiratory disorders. We invite researchers and authors to submit both original research and review articles on the usage of integrative medicine for a range of respiratory disorders.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

  • The impact of CAMs on care and management of respiratory disorders and related complications compared to pharmaceutical drugs
  • Mechanism of action of natural products/herbal extracts used as CAM in respiratory disorders
  • Alternative techniques such as acupuncture, moxibustion, tuina, cupping, Tai Chi, Baduanjin, Wuqinxi, etc, for the care and management of respiratory disorders
  • Traditional medicines of different regions, such as Iran, China, Africa, or Europe
  • Nutrition and dietary supplements
  • Pharmaceutical analysis to assess the safety and efficacy of CAMs
  • Interactions between CAMs and pharmaceutical drugs
  • Integrative medicine using evidence-based medicine and bioinformatics approaches to study respiratory disorders
