Herbal Medicine for Prevention and Therapy in Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs)

This issue is now closed for submissions.

Description

A non-communicable disease (NCD) is a disease that is usually related to diet, lifestyle as well as genetic diseases and cannot be transmitted directly from one person to another. NCDs include most types of cancers, diabetes, autoimmune diseases, cardiovascular disease, chronic kidney disease, gout, osteoporosis, Alzheimer's disease, and others. NCDs are the leading cause of death globally. Although modern medicine has been used for first-line treatment of such diseases, traditional herbal medicine has also been widely used as a complementary and alternative strategy. It is important to document and publish research to provide scientific evidence for the use of herbal medicine. The concern with herbal medicine is the quality and standardization of the herbal product, especially the presence of bioactive compounds which are responsible for herbal medicine’s effect, efficacy, mechanism of action, safety, and herb-drug interaction if it is being used as complementary medicine in conjunction with modern medicine.

This Special Issue aims to provide a platform for researchers to publish the latest developments and recent research, both basic and clinical, in the use of herbal medicine for NCDs prevention and therapy, including but not limited to ethnopharmacology, natural product chemistry, efficacy, safety, and toxicity, in vitro and in vivo pre-clinical trial, herb-drug interaction, clinical trial, possible mechanisms of action as well as evidence-based herbal medicine. Network pharmacology and molecular docking approaches that are not accompanied by lab work (i.e., isolation/profiling of phytochemicals as well as in vitro and/or in vivo study) are not accepted for this Special Issue. Researchers are invited to submit original research or review articles for possible inclusion in this Special Issue.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

  • Systematic reviews and/or meta-analysis of the use of herbal medicine for NCDs prevention and therapy based on a specific region/country/community (i.e., Western, Malay, Chinese, Indian, Thai, Indonesian, etc
  • Ethnobotany and ethnopharmacology of herbs for NCDs prevention and therapy
  • Characterization of active ingredients in herbal plants that have NCDs prevention and therapy properties
  • The biological and pharmacological activity of natural and herbal extracts as NCDs prevention and therapy
  • In vitro and in vivo study and toxicity evaluation of natural and herbal products for NCDs prevention and therapy
  • Herb-drug interaction in NCDs prevention and therapy
  • Clinical trials of natural and herbal products for NCDs prevention and therapy
  • Mechanism of action of natural and herbal products as NCDs prevention and therapy
  • Genomic and proteomic approaches in herbal medicine for NCDs prevention and therapy
