Description

Urogenital disorders affect the urinary and genital tracts. There are a wide range of urogenital disorders including acute renal failure, acute tubular necrosis, benign prostate hypertrophy, chronic renal failure, and erectile dysfunction. Genitourinary (GU) cancers are one of the most important urogenital disorders, accounting for more than 30% of all cancers in men. Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is characterized by insulin resistance, central adiposity, dyslipidemia, endothelial dysfunction and atherosclerotic disease, inflammation, and low testosterone levels in males. Several studies have revealed that there is a correlation between genitourinary diseases and MetS. MetS has been linked to a number of urological diseases including nephrolithiasis, benign prostatic hyperplasia and lower urinary tract symptoms, erectile dysfunction, male infertility, female incontinence, and prostate cancer.

In recent years, nutraceuticals and complementary treatments are gaining popularity in the treatment of various diseases. Increasing evidence has reported the role of herbal medicine and natural products in the management of genitourinary and metabolic disorders. Several studies have revealed that about 70-80% of the population, especially from low-income countries, rely on traditional medicinal remedies to treat health problems. Several active components have been isolated from medicinal plants and are being in use as a successful treatment option.

Therefore, this Special Issue aims to collate original research and review articles concentrating on the effects of herbal medicine and natural products in the management/treatment of genitourinary and metabolic disorders.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

  • Herbal plants for the treatment of prostate disorders
  • Medicinal herbs as chemotherapeutic agents in bladder diseases
  • Medicinal plants in testicular and penile disorders
  • Herbal products in genitourinary disorders
  • Preclinical and clinical studies of phytochemicals in genitourinary cancer
  • Herbal remedies as cytoprotective agents to reduce toxicity with conventional treatment of genitourinary cancer
