Lifestyle Modification Strategies to Counteract the World Epidemic Growth of Obesity and Diabetes

Description

Obesity and type 2 diabetes are increasing all over the world at an alarming rate due to unhealthy lifestyles. The fight against childhood obesity represents one of the biggest social and health problems all over the world. Diabetes mellitus reduces quality of life and life expectancy and represents a serious economic burden. The correction of unhealthy lifestyles is possible through cost-effective measures and it might prevent about 80% of cases of heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes and 40% of cancers. At present, there is a need to advance in the science of delivering health promotion and reproducible multidisciplinary models for the prevention and treatment of obesity and diabetes using lifestyle change. We invite investigators to contribute original research articles as well as review articles that will stimulate the continuing efforts to establish the optimal strategies to deliver lifestyle interventions in children and adults and to evaluate the outcomes of the interventions in terms of efficacy, cost/efficacy, and cost/utility. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Recent developments in lifestyle models for diabetes prevention and therapy
  • Epidemiology of childhood obesity and optimal strategies of intervention
  • Advances in nutritional approaches for diabetes prevention and therapy
  • Advances in the implementation of exercise for diabetes prevention and therapy
  • Latest technologies for clinical evaluation and measuring outcomes of lifestyle interventions
  • Recent advances in behavioural models to induce lifestyle changes
  • Innovative models trialled by public and private sectors to promote active and healthy lifestyles
  • Role of cultural, environmental, economic, and psychological factors that facilitate or obstacle healthy lifestyle behaviours
  • Identification of barriers/facilitators that inhibit or promote the individuals capacity to increase physical activity and reduce sedentary behaviour
  • Views and needs of subjects at risk or affected by type 2 diabetes on effective strategies for lifestyle change
