Description

Robotic radical prostatectomy opened the gates for the introduction of robotic technology to urological surgery and has been widely adopted worldwide. However, the utility of robotic platform was soon realized and over the past decade it has been applied to a wide plethora of urological procedures.

The magnified three-dimensional vision and articulated wrist movement have allowed for complex urological surgeries to be performed in a minimally invasive fashion without compromising oncological or functional outcomes. Smaller incision, earlier recovery, reduced blood loss, and lower complication rates have been demonstrated in a plethora of urological procedures when compared to the open counterparts.

In this special issue we aim to provide an overview of the full range of urological procedures performed with the aid of robotic technologies. We also endeavor to highlight the new technological innovations that are developed along with robotic platforms. These include but are not limited to advances in imaging guided surgery, augmented reality surgery, and automated surgery. We encourage and especially welcome submissions relating to these latter topics. We also aim to investigate whether there is true health value in using such technologies and explore the advantages or disadvantages of utilizing such technologies for various urological procedures.

Although initially robotic surgery was limited to a single robotic system in urology, other platforms are on the horizon and we aim to examine their utility in the modern urological practice.
