Applications of Fiber Reinforced Polymer Composites in Civil Engineering
Description
Fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites have received considerable practice and research attention in the last few decades owing to their superior durability-related properties and lower weight to strength/stiffness ratios compared to conventional construction and building materials. In recent practices in civil engineering, FRP composites have been of core interest for scientists and engineers in the strengthening of existing structure. Other applications of such composites are to construct new structural elements, including the utilization of FRP reinforcements as alternatives to conventional steel reinforcements, the development of hybrid structural systems, the use of FRP tubes as stay-in-place formworks for structural elements, and the use of FRP pultruded thin-walled profiles. Up to now, a good number of studies have been dedicated to understanding the advantages offered by FRP composites in construction applications. However, as there are still many unanswered questions in applying FRP composites in structural elements, the behavior of FRP composites requires further study prior to a broader uptake of the applications of them.
This special issue invites researchers working in this field to submit original research and review articles and will collect cutting-edge knowledge and recent advances in the application of FRP composites in civil, mechanical, and chemical engineering.
Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:
- Design and analysis of FRP-based smart components and structures
- Applications of FRP materials in structures under the marine environment
- Recent advances in designs, manufacture and applications of FRP
