Coeliac Disease (CD)

Description

Coeliac disease (CD) is an autoimmune disorder, caused by a permanent intolerance to gluten contained in wheat and to similar prolamines present in barley and rye. It is a common disease, as its prevalence, in Caucasian populations, is about 1%. There are several patterns of clinical presentation: symptomatic CD and silent CD, both characterized by typical histological lesions in the small bowel mucosa, as well as latent and potential CD, where by definition the small bowel mucosa is not damaged. Nowadays the gluten-free diet for life is the only therapy available for CD. Considerable progresses have been made regarding the field of biotechnology, which led to a better understanding of the genetic mechanisms involved in CD and the identification of new pathogenetic pathways that could be targeted by new drugs. We invite authors to contribute original research articles as well as review articles that will stimulate the continuing efforts to understand the molecular and genetic pathophysiology of CD. We are particularly interested in articles that explore advances in molecular genetics and molecular diagnostics; clinical characterization of CD; current concepts in the treatment of CD and new possible drugs therapy. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Elucidating the role of genetic and environmental factors in the development of CD
  • Identification of new pathogenetic pathways that could be targeted by new drugs
  • Clinical patterns of CD and related diseases
  • New possible strategies in the diagnosis of CD
  • Development and testing of novel and effective therapies
